Ions are atoms or molecules that have lost or gained electrons.
If the atoms or molecules lose electrons, they become positively
charged ions. If they gain electrons, they become negatively
charges ions. The proportion of hydrogen ions in a solution
allows us to measure the PH (potential hydrogen) of the solution.
Water has an almost perfect balance of positive and
the negative ions. The positively charged ions are
hydrogen ions (H+) and negatively charged ions are hydroxide
ions (OH-).
